New York Medical College at Metropolitan Hospital Center

Surgical Simulation Laboratory

Metropolitan Hospital Center and its surgical residents have full-access to IMSAL, the Institute for Medical Simulation & Advanced Learning. This state of the art simulation laboratory is a 10,000 square-foot center located in the Bronx, serving to advance the medical capabilities of residents within the HHC (Health and Hospitals Corporation) network of New York City public hospitals, of which Metropolitan Hospital is a proud part. Here, our residents have the opportunity to hone their skills in advanced techniques and critical scenarios, ultimately becoming better prepared for the challenges to be encountered in real life.

IMSAL features two operating rooms, one labor and delivery room, four Emergency/ICU rooms, and four exam rooms. Additionally, there are various task-trainer simulation devices to practice specialized surgical and endoscopic skills. Of note, the laparoscopic simulation trainers are a valuable resource for the surgical resident training for the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) exam required for General Surgery licensure.

The simulations offered by the Center include:

  • Central Line Placement

  • Pediatric Airway

  • Adult Advanced Airway

  • Laparoscopy

  • Endoscopy

  • Bronchoscopy

  • Trauma

  • Birthing Emergencies

  • Cardiac Codes

Perhaps the most valuable tool offered by the center is that of self-critique. In the debriefing session after each clinical scenario, residents will have the golden opportunity to watch their performances via the many integrated video cameras throughout the center capturing every move and potential misstep. Similar to a musician's self-critique from audio recordings, the aspiring Surgeon can better build his or her skill set with guided introspection based on video feedback.
